Service of Nine Lessons and Carols
12th December, 2016
The Memorial Hall was absolutely packed for the annual and atmospheric Service of Nine Lessons and Carols, which took place on Sunday 11 December at 6pm. Traditional congregational carols were interspersed with contributions from the Chapel Choir, which was in exceptionally good voice. Every one of its carols was performed to a high standard, with secure tuning and excellent diction. Particularly highpoints were John Gardner’s setting of “Tomorrow shall be my Dancing Day” and Harold Darke’s haunting setting of “In the bleak Midwinter”, along with the powerful treble descants to the congregational carols. Special mention should go to soloists Alexander R, Alasdair B and Finlay R for their outstanding contributions. The pupil readers, Felix M (Pringle), Adam W (Chalmers West), Findlay Broch M (Chalmers East), William H (Rogerson), Rory M (Evans), Hamish R (Laidlaw North) and Luca S-F (Captain of School) were of an equally high standard. Thanks for such an impressive service must go to Director of Music, Stephen Dennis, Organist, David Turner, and Chaplain Nick Blair.
The Carol Service provided a formal climax to the Autumn Term and marked the start of Christmas. Less formally, Houses have been having special meals at restaurants in and around Edinburgh, and the Christmas meals in School, always a highpoint, take place on Tuesday, before the boys head home for a well-deserved Christmas holiday.
