Working at Merchiston Castle School
Merchiston Castle School is one of Scotland’s leading independent boarding schools, renowned for its excellent academic standards and pastoral care. With an ethos based on traditional values, Merchiston encourages self-reliance and independence, as well as respect and tolerance of others.
Merchiston has an enviable geographical position, located four miles outside of Edinburgh city centre, but retaining a rural feel with the Pentland Hills as a backdrop and surrounded by woods and playing fields. The School is situated close to the City Bypass and only a fifteen minute drive from Edinburgh International Airport.
There are currently around 200 members of staff comprising of Academic, Admin and Support, both full time and part time.
Merchiston sets out the policies and procedures for all employees in its staff handbook. All successful applicants will be provided with access to this handbook and part of their induction will focus on these policies and procedures. Applicants should note that offers of employment are subject to:
- Membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme
Successful candidates are required to apply for and obtain a satisfactory Scheme Record from the PVG scheme. The School will pay the requisite fee.
- Satisfactory Employment References
Applicants are required to provide details of 2 referees – one being your current or previous line manager. References will not be accepted from relatives or referees writing solely in the capacity of friends. References may be taken up prior to interview. Applicants should advise their referees that contact from the School is a possibility.

Employers must ensure that any prospective employee is legally entitled to live and work in the UK. Applicants will be required to provide documentary evidence of such eligibility.
- Education, Qualifications and Registration
For applicants who apply for posts that require specific qualifications and registration, any offer of appointment will be subject to applicants providing evidence of such qualifications and registration.
