At Merchiston, support for learning is embedded across the whole school. Every student is known as an individual, and every teacher plays a role in ensuring that each learner is supported, challenged and able to make meaningful progress.
Our Support for Learning team works closely with teaching staff to provide guidance on effective, research-informed approaches. This includes supporting students with additional needs, such as dyslexia, as well as ensuring appropriate stretch and challenge for those who are academically able.
Working in Partnership
We take a collaborative approach, working in partnership with students, parents, teachers and pastoral staff. Open communication is central to this, ensuring that support is consistent, well-informed and responsive.
Students are actively involved in this process. They are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, identify areas where they may need support, and understand how they learn best. This forms the basis of an individual learning profile, which helps guide teaching approaches and support strategies across the school.
Assessment, Monitoring and Ongoing Support
Where additional support may be required, assessments are carried out as part of the admissions process or during a student’s time at the school. This allows us to put appropriate support in place from the outset and to ensure a smooth transition.
Progress is carefully monitored, with regular opportunities for parents to discuss academic development and the support being provided. Our aim is to ensure that every student feels confident in their learning, develops independence and achieves their full potential.

The Harvey hub
Support for Learning is based at the heart of the school in The Harvey Hub, a dedicated space named after former Headmaster Thomas Harvey (1856–1863). Designed to be both welcoming and purposeful, it is a central point where students and staff can connect easily throughout the school day.
The Hub is used by students across all year groups, whether for timetabled support, independent study or simply a quiet place to focus. Small-group sessions are often held here, providing targeted support in areas such as literacy, study skills, revision strategies and exam technique. Many Sixth Form students also choose to use the space for independent work during study periods.
This structured, supportive approach helps students build confidence, develop effective learning habits and achieve strong academic outcomes, whatever their starting point.
Laura Cougan, Head of Support for Learning, is always happy to speak with families and can offer guidance at any stage of the admissions process.
