Armed Forces Families

Frequent relocations, deployments and changing circumstances can make continuity of education a challenge. At Merchiston, we provide a stable, structured and supportive environment where boys can thrive academically, socially and personally, regardless of where your service takes you. With a long-standing boarding tradition and a deeply embedded ethos of resilience, camaraderie and leadership, Merchiston is a natural home for Forces families.

The Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) is a UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) financial support scheme for eligible service personnel to pay for boarding school fees for their children. It enables children to maintain consistent education and avoid disruption from frequent military relocations and postings.

The Education Advisory Team (UK), a part of the Defence Children Services, provides professional information, advice and guidance regarding the education of Service Children in the UK. Additionally, the Children’s Education Advisory Service (CEAS) provides authoritative, bespoke and professional advice regarding educational wellbeing of the children and young people belonging to families in all 3 services and eligible MOD civilians who are based overseas.

From August 2026, Merchiston is pleased to announce it will become a 10% school to further support Forces families. Families of currently serving HM Armed Forces personnel in receipt of the CEA are eligible for a fee remission. In most cases, this means the parental contribution is limited to 10% of the full boarding fee.

Eligible families are invited to contact the Bursar’s Office to discuss their individual fee arrangements. Our Admissions Team is also on hand to provide further guidance on the support available to Forces families.
