David Blair

David Blair

Teacher of Physical Education; 1XV Rugby Coach, Rogerson Housemaster

Mr Blair is a former professional rugby player with a First-Class Honours degree in Physical Education, Sports Studies and Professional Education. He is passionate about teaching Physical Education and has extensive knowledge on the subject. He employs a number of teaching styles in his classes in order to develop life skills that go beyond the classroom, such as communication, leadership and responsibility. He particularly enjoys incorporating the use of iPads in his lessons, as they enable boys to analyse and improve their performances. Mr Blair currently teaches Higher Physical Education and really enjoys teaching pupils about the way in which mental and emotional factors can impact performance. In addition to his role within the PE department, Mr Blair is also the lead attack coach and backs specialist for the 1st XV rugby team. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf and racket sports.

Roddy Deans

Director of Rugby

Roddy Deans is passionate about rugby, having been brought up in the Borders and having strong rugby traditions running through his family. He has already amassed over 20 years of rugby development experience. He possesses vast knowledge and understanding of how to develop young players from a primary age through to national performance rugby players.

He has worked for the Scottish Rugby Union as Edinburgh’s Rugby Development Officer. Within this role, he coached Edinburgh Pathway teams at U14 & U15 levels and Edinburgh U16, U17 & U18. Roddy has also coached Hawick RFC and Heriot’s RFC in the Scottish Premiership. As a player, he also captained both teams and won the Scottish Premiership, Border League and Scottish Cup at both Clubs. Roddy has been coaching the Scotland U16 team for five seasons and was Head Coach for two years. He has a proven track record of identifying, coaching and mentoring many current professional players and Scotland internationalists.

Roddy comments: “I fully believe development can be accelerated through the environment you create as a coach. Through my experience as a teacher, coach and parent, I feel we can create the perfect learning environment to allow every child the opportunity to express himself and further develop.”

Rugby Camp Programme Overview

My son enjoyed the variety of training and thoroughly enjoyed his week – it was a fantastic experience and he has made some good friends as well.

It was brilliant – I hope to go again next year!
