Over the Easter break, V Form pupil, Stephan, kept himself extremely busy working with a Chinese manufacturer of personal protective equipment. He organised the manufacture and delivery of 3,000 masks and 15,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to the charity MENCAP to help protect their staff at this crucial time.
"Thank you so much for helping us out in our time of need. Supplying PPE to our front-line staff at this critical time is so important, and with your help, and the help of others, we have been able to do this satisfactorily." Edel Harris, Mencap CEO
Here is his story: "I realised from media coverage that many organisations were in desperate need of PPE, so I decided I was going to help a charity get the essentials they needed. I chose MENCAP because it is one of the biggest charity organisations in the UK with thousands of front-line staff so I thought they would be in most desperate need of the PPE."
I contacted the company and asked if they knew a trusted manufacturer in China that produced PPE. They recommended a company in Guangzhou and placed me in contact with them. Using my mandarin speaking skills, it became clear to me this company was who I wanted to work with."
I learned several things from the project:
- how useful mandarin really can be and how it opens such dynamic opportunities;
- age is no barrier it is only a hurdle;
- how freight works around the world and all the different stages of importing goods to the UK;
- the positives and negatives of different transport for freight."
"Stephan embodies a unique entrepreneurial spirit that is rarely seen at this early stage in a boy's development, but it is something we have encouraged in Rogerson House. What makes this all the more impressive, though not surprising to those that know or are fortunate enough to teach him, is the generosity of time and energy and his unwavering willingness to help others in this time of crisis. This is reflective of his efforts within the House community. Stephan is someone who likes to think outside the box - he has identified a problem and a gap in support, and he has done everything he can to facilitate a solution. His Rogerson family are extremely proud of him and, as his Housemaster, I was absolutely thrilled to hear what Stephan had been working away at over the Easter Holidays. "David Blair, Housemaster, Rogerson (V Form)
