On Friday 8 February, 28 boys started their Half Term break with a trip to Manchester for our Football and Basketball Team Tour. We left the school early to travel to Sedbergh School for both Football and Basketball fixtures. Sedbergh were very welcoming, supplying a pre-game lunch for us and fantastic facilities for our visit. Both the Football and Basketball Teams won, 5-4 and 60-47, respectively.

Following our visit to Sedbergh, we continued on the road to Manchester. We stayed at the Trafford Centre, and with spirits high after a successful day of fixtures, the boys enjoyed a game of crazy golf after dinner at Five Guys.

The following morning the Basketball Team headed for Woodhouse Leeds for their fixture and the Football Team departed for Manchester Grammar. Both teams were offered a warm welcome. The matches were hotly contested, and again, both of the Merchiston teams were successful, football 2-0 and basketball 68-38 winners.

It is testament to the efforts and passion of the boys that we finished the tour undefeated in both sports. Football and Basketball teams are enjoying incredibly successful seasons and this is yet another example of Merchiston excelling in a variety of sports.

Following the morning fixtures, and a celebration meal at Nando’s, the boys moved on to tour the Etihad Stadium and home of Manchester City. The boys enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the Stadium and facilities, including the home team dressing room and walking out on to the pitch in true match style. The media centre was also a highlight with the boys sitting in the player and manager chairs and role playing a press conference and interview.

The boys had a fantastic couple of days and had a wonderful experience playing other schools and visiting a Premier League Football Club. The boys represented Merchiston superbly well, while visiting schools, playing competitive matches and travelling between each venue. Very well done to all involved and we all look forward to the rest of the season!
