‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…’

For the pupils and staff who live in a boarding House - this is a magical time of year! The glow of the many fairy lights glistening around the day room and through the corridors, combined with that end-of-term anticipation, makes everyone feel that inevitable festive cheer.

With such joy and happiness filling the House it is also a very good time to reflect.

This term in Rogerson, we have launched a series of events, workshops and information sessions with our boys to raise awareness of matters that impact people’s lives in the wider world.

We have called this programme: #BeyondTheCastleWalls

Earlier this month we welcomed representatives from our House charity, Mercy Corps UK, into the heart of our Rogerson home. The boys engaged in an interactive workshop, delving deeper into the operations of Mercy Corps.

This incredible organisation describes itself as being:

‘...a global team of humanitarians who partner with communities, corporations and governments to transform lives around the world.’

The organisation’s mission is to: ‘alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.’

The boys selected Mercy Corps UK as the House charity for this year with a little encouragement of our charity prefect, Firman. He was so inspired when introduced to the organisation through Rogerson resident tutor, Dr Lilley, that he felt compelled to share his knowledge with the rest of the House.

Another element of our #BeyondTheCastleWalls series comes in the form of a current affairs session with our Assistant Housemaster, Mr Troxler.

He engages the boys in a discussion on global news stories, impacting people’s lives around the world.

Mr Blair, our Housemaster, offers his daily motivational messages to get the boys to think beyond their day-to-day lives.

In addition to his incredible charity work with Mercy Corps, Dr Lilley is also championing Save the Children’s Christmas jumper day! Prepare to see some festive snaps appearing on our House Twitter account, @MerchiRog

We have a number of exciting workshops planned for after the Christmas holiday, including a talk by the RNLI on the incredible work they do and a talk on digital addiction to help the boys better understand how to use...and put down...their digital devices and when to ask for help on limiting use.

We live in such an incredible school community - it’s easy to forget that life exists outside of the bubble. We shall keep you updated on our #BeyondTheCastleWalls activities throughout the course of the year!

In the meantime, from Mr Blair and all at Rogerson, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
