Cecil Stagg Society
The Society is named after Cecil Stagg, Headmaster of Merchiston 1915 to 1936.
Cecil Stagg was a Scholar of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He brought Merchiston through the very difficult First World War years, with a shortage of food and the difficulty of employing new masters. 176 boys and masters lost their lives, and a Memorial Hall with the names of the Fallen inscribed was planned. In 1930, Cecil Stagg successfully managed the logistical and emotional challenge of the move to Colinton from the old Castle site, and is remembered as an accomplished academic.
The Cecil Stagg Society exists to identify and nurture the most able academics within the student body. Membership is by invitation; most Scholars become members, but other boys can be recommended by teachers. Meetings are held regularly and these serve to challenge and inspire pupils beyond the classroom in a diverse range of topics which can involve guest speakers.
