Autumn Term Sports Round-Up

Rugby 

The U16s won the Scottish Schools Cup for the third time since its inauguration in 2010. They beat Dollar Academy, 41-5 in a fantastic performance at Murrayfield. The 1st XV won the Scottish Schools Shield competition earlier in the afternoon against George Heriots. The school finished in second place in the Colts Whole School Conference, 7 points behind Stewart’s Melville College. We were also equal on points to Stewart’s Melville in the 1XV Conference.

Football

With over 35 boys playing Senior Football, the 1XI have a had an excellent start to the year, recording wins against SMC B, Clifton Hall, Fettes and Glenalmond. The Independent Schools Cup is in the early stages, and the boys have currently one won and lost one in the group stages. The 2XI have also had four matches, competing very well.

Basketball

The U18s topped their pool in the Scottish Schools Cup and have now qualified for the Knockout Stage of the Scottish Schools. They remain one of the only two independent schools in the Scottish Schools Open Cup. They also enjoyed a short tour to Barcelona over weekend leave where they enjoyed two matches against local teams.

Tennis

The U18As won the UK National Schools for the second year running, and have also secured a spot in the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup. The U18Bs are through to the Northern regional stage of the Senior Schools Competition. The U15s won the Scottish Cup beating The High School of Glasgow. They travelled down to Bolton last weekend to compete in the UK National Finals against Reeds, Millfield and Ellsmere. The U13s lost in the Scottish Cup against Strathallan. Current UVI pupils, Johannus and Charlie, have been accepted to Top 50 Tennis Universities. Johannus will go to University of Tennessee and Charlie will be attending the University of Denver. Our two co-captains of tennis last year, Jacob and Matthew, went over to the US to study at TCU and Gonzaga University respectively. Jacob has recently gained an ATP ranking and also made his first Men’s Pro Final in Texas.

Golf

One of our U18 teams will reach the UK National Finals in 2020. The Merchiston A team will play the Merchiston B team in the Scottish Regional Finals. The A team had good wins against The High School of Glasgow and Stewart’s Melville.

Hockey

The 1st XI played in the Aspire Cup against Grove Academy, Renfrewshire Schools, Perth Schools and McLaren High School. The U15s lost to Fettes College in the Schools Cup. They will not play in the Plate competition next term. Congratulations to Max for being selected for Edinburgh Lightning in the U18 Academy Series. 

Swimming

We had several boys competing in the Edinburgh Schools Competition over weekend leave, and there were some fantastic performances. Shell Pupil, Micah has qualified for the Scottish Schools Competition next term.
