Big congratulations to Freddie (U6) for successfully securing a one year Confucius Institute Scholarship to study the Chinese language at Fudan University, one of the most prestigious universities in China! All tuition fee, accommodation and living costs will be fully covered by the scholarship.
The Confucius Institute Scholarship is for applicants who want to study International Chinese Education and related programmes in China. There are seven types of scholarships on offer, and the one year scholarship is a perfect gap year option for school leavers who have been studying Mandarin.
To apply for the scholarship, applicants need to achieve a score of at least 210 on HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) Level 3. Any applicant with an HSK (Chinese Speaking Proficiency Test) result will be given priority admission. At Merchiston, all VI form boys who take Mandarin also sit HSK level 3 or 4 at either L6 or U6 as an additional qualification.
After scoring well at HSK level 3 and 4, Freddie had to compete not just with other school pupils but also the wider community including university students who have studied Mandarin for years. We are so pleased that he also managed to win the heart of Edinburgh University, who acted as his recommending institution for the programme.
Very well done Freddie!
