For many the end of a busy summer of cricket is an opportunity to pack away the pads until next year, but not at Merchiston. From October Half Term, through to the Easter holidays, Merchiston runs a winter programme.
In the Autumn term, there is a focus on the development of specialised skills. Steven Gilmour (Scotland Performance Squad & Eastern Knight Head Coach) along with Rory McCann (Head of Cricket & Director of Sport), both Level 3 ECB qualified coaches offer separate clinics looking to develop the technical aspects of batting, fast bowling, spin bowling and wicket keeping. Some regular guests come in and help with these sessions, namely school coach and Scotland Bowler, Alasdair Evans. The boys participate in other sports during this time; this vital work provides them with the best opportunity to move into the squad sessions in the Lent Term with confidence and a greater understanding of their game.
As we move into the Lent Term, we open up the sessions to all boys throughout the school who would like to give cricket a go. Cricket is offered over three days at various times from J4 (Primary/Year 4) through to UVI (S5/S6, Year 12/13).
We believe our winter programme is fundamental in the preparation of boys entering a very busy Summer term, full of competition, exams and more. As one of the three major sports in the School, we have a proud history and tradition, and we continue to enhance further the quality of the programme we offer at Merchiston. There will be some who want to play for fun, some who want to improve and some who will want to represent at a higher level.
