Congratulations to last year’s Fifth Form for an impressive and well-earned set of results at I/GCSE and National 5.

It was great to see pupils’ hard work over their two years of I/GCSE rewarded with an excellent batch of results, maintaining Merchiston’s outstanding track record at this level. At I/GCSE this year thus included 44% at Grade 8/9, with an overall pass rate of 93%.

At this time of year, every teacher is conscious that the real measure of success for an individual pupil is relative to their ability and the effort put into their studies. Dedicated teaching staff and a genuine focus on the individual and the fact that we really understand boys ensures that each pupil reaches his potential. We must remember that for some a set of 4 and 5 grades at GCSE level in a particular subject is just as huge an achievement as entry to Oxbridge for another.

While the unexpected absence of exams made for an unusual Summer Term, we were delighted to see the energy and enthusiasm with which Fifth Formers engaged with our Introduction to Sixth Form Study distance learning modules. All at Merchiston now look forward to welcoming this cohort back to embark formally on their full A Level courses next week - this is a talented group, for whom exciting things lie ahead, and we can’t get wait to get stuck back in.
