Friday afternoon was full of excitement as our Junior pupils spotted from their classrooms the air dome for the Indoor Tennis Centre being inflated. The installation of the new indoor heated tennis facility will provide year-round access for coaching and practice, based within our 100-acre campus.

Richard Charman, Deputy Head of Co-Curricular, said “I am delighted to see the dome inflated. This has been an amazing project delivered by a huge team of professionals, and it sits perfectly in the Merchiston campus. We still have some work to complete, and the courts will be ready for use in the Summer Term. We will then look forward to launching the full Community and School Programmes in September.”

Simon Pender, Director of Tennis, added “The Indoor Tennis Centre will provide even more opportunities for our Tennis Academy players to maximise their time at Merchiston, combining tennis and school education in one place consistently and effectively. On a wider scale, Merchiston can now play its part in supporting tennis in the community and growing the game within Edinburgh and Scotland.”

Works are continuing for the Centre, and the acrylic courts are due to be laid in the coming weeks. The company Rocklyn who are installing the Indoor Tennis Centre are using the same surfaces for the courts like the ones used at the Australian Open.

The Merchiston Tennis Academy offers player pathways from top county level players to junior grand slam level and remains a select Academy maintaining around 20-25 players at any one time.
