This term, the Senior boys have the opportunity to play Polo as part of their Senior Activity Programme.
Every Tuesday, we head to Stewarton Polo Club, near South Queensferry, for a 1 hour lesson with Karina Bowlby, who coached the SUPA Young England Team, and Juan Martin Sepulveda, a 2-goal pro player from Argentinia. The Club has incredible facilities and the view down to the bridges makes an incredible backdrop to the lessons.
Polo is a fast-paced and exciting game to play. It requires many of the skills necessary in other team sports, including co-ordination, forward planning, quick thinking, being able to move into spaces and team-work. It has been incredible to see how easily the boys have picked up the initial basics; they are obviously used to listening carefully to coaching feedback and this stood them in good stead in their first lesson today.
Initially, the boys learnt the 4 basic Polo shots on foot, practising with a hand mallet and ball in the Club’s indoor arena. They then kitted up and took to their ponies, working on their hitting technique from horseback. The Club take great pride in their coaching and it wasn’t long before the boys were whizzing the ball up the outdoor arena. The weather may not have been on our side today, but the boys were full of good spirits and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you to Stewarton Polo for hosting us and to Juan for imparting some of his incredible know-how. We can not wait to come next week!
