On Friday 9 March, four boys (two III Form and two IV Form) were selected to represent the School at a Regional Heat of the UKMT Junior Maths Team Challenge, in which the winners would progress to the National Final in London.
The event took place at the stylish Informatics Forum Building on the Edinburgh University campus and 26 schools from the surrounding area were taking part. After starting with some introductory puzzles to get the teams warmed up, the competition then began with the Group Puzzle round. This was followed by a Crossnumber, Shuttle and Relay Race rounds – each lasting around 45 minutes with teams only getting a momentary break for lunch! After an exhausting mental effort – and physical during the relay round – the Merchiston pupils placed a very creditable position in the first ten teams. A thoroughly enjoyable experience was had by all, deciphering decidedly difficult mathematical puzzles and displaying mathematical ability beyond their years.
