Beating Retreat at Edinburgh Castle

25th May, 2018

Outdoor EducationSchool Event

On the evening of 23 May 2018, Merchiston Castle School CCF (Merchiston & St George’s) hosted the Beating Retreat of the Massed Pipes and Drums at Edinburgh Castle. As the host school, it fell to us to plan, organise and conduct the event. Including Merchiston, ten other schools with CCFs in Scotland arrived with six pipers and three drummers. Schools were also represented by Highland dancers to add to the glamour of the occasion. The massed band and dancers performed for 30 minutes in front of invited guests and members of the public to great applause and appreciation. In the background, facilitating and enabling the event, was a core of both staff and cadets from Merchiston & St George’s. The level of professionalism, discipline and manners shown by these cadets was praised by many of the guests. The guests were hosted in the Great Hall within Edinburgh Castle, a privilege granted by the Governor of Edinburgh Castle, Major General Riddell-Webster. Guests included Officers involved with the CCF from across the UK and friends and family of the host school.
