Boarding Houses

Chalmers East and West are Merchiston’s Middle Years boarding and day houses, offering a supportive, inclusive environment where students build confidence, friendships and strong foundations for GCSE study.

Chalmers East and West are the entry point for boarding in the Senior School, providing a supportive and structured environment where students in III Form (S1/Year 8) to V Form (S4/Year 11) quickly feel at home.

Bringing together students from across the UK and around the world, Chalmers is a vibrant and diverse community. Living and learning alongside others helps students build confidence, develop independence and form friendships that often last throughout their time at school and beyond.

Life in Chalmers is centred on strong relationships and a shared sense of community. Students are encouraged to look out for one another, develop mutual respect and contribute positively to house life.

House staff provide consistent support and clear guidance, helping students settle quickly while encouraging them to take increasing responsibility for themselves and their environment.

The Middle Years are a crucial stage of development. In Chalmers, the focus is on establishing positive habits, both academically and personally, that prepare students for GCSE study and beyond.

Students are encouraged to explore their interests, build confidence and develop a sense of purpose, within an environment that allows them to feel comfortable being themselves.

Chalmers offers more than accommodation; it provides the structure, support and sense of belonging that underpin a successful Senior School experience.

Laidlaw North and South are Merchiston’s Sixth Form boarding houses, offering independent living, modern accommodation and a supportive environment that prepares students for university and life beyond school.

Laidlaw is the dedicated Sixth Form boarding house at Merchiston, designed to prepare students for the transition to university and adult life.

With single bedrooms and en-suite facilities, Laidlaw offers a more independent style of living, while maintaining the structure and support needed during the demands of Sixth Form study.

Life in Laidlaw is shaped by mutual respect, trust and responsibility. Students are given greater freedom and are expected to use it thoughtfully, recognising their role within the wider school community.

Sixth Formers play an important part in supporting younger students and contributing to the culture of the school, developing leadership, empathy and a strong sense of responsibility.

Laidlaw provides an environment where students can focus on both academic ambition and personal development. It is a place to reflect, explore future pathways and develop the confidence needed for the next stage.

Relationships with staff evolve into a more informal, collegiate dynamic, helping students prepare for life beyond school in a setting that remains supportive and structured.

By the time students leave Laidlaw, they do so with the independence, self-discipline and confidence to succeed at university and beyond.
