Daily & Weekend Life

When lessons finish, students return to their houses to begin the evening routine.

Evening study time, known as prep, provides a focused environment for completing homework, consolidating learning and developing independent study skills. House staff are on hand to support and monitor progress, working closely with teachers to ensure each student is well supported.

After prep, the atmosphere becomes more relaxed. Students spend time with friends, take part in activities, or simply unwind. Depending on the season, this might include informal sport on the grounds, house-based activities or quiet time reading and recharging.

Boarding houses remain well staffed throughout the evening, ensuring students always have someone to turn to for support or conversation.

Younger students follow a clear bedtime structure, helping to establish positive habits around rest and routine. As students move through the school, they are given greater independence, with guidance from house staff to ensure a healthy balance between work and rest.

Weekends offer a different pace, combining structured activities with time to relax.

Students can take part in a wide range of opportunities, including sport, trips, social events and the school’s Saturday Electives programme. There is also space for downtime, whether that’s spending time with friends, catching up on rest or enjoying the school’s facilities.

We recognise that family time is important. Outside of designated boarding weekends, students can spend time at home or with family by arrangement, offering flexibility to suit individual circumstances.

From weekday routines to weekend activities, boarding life at Merchiston offers a rich and balanced experience. Students benefit from a supportive structure, strong friendships and the time to make the most of everything the school has to offer.
