In Headmaster’s Assembly on Tuesday 10 May, it was announced that Luca (on right of photo) has been appointed to the important position of Captain of School for the academic year 2016 – 2017: the applause which followed as Luca went up to the stage to be congratulated by the Headmaster and the current Captain of School, Johnny (photo left), indicated that he is a popular choice both amongst his year group and the School population as a whole.

Luca joined Merchiston in Chalmers West on an All-Rounder Scholarship in September 2012 from Cargilfield Preparatory School, initially as a day boy, and converting to boarding when in Rogerson. He performed strongly in his GCSEs, and is now studying English, History, French and Spanish in the Sixth Form, with a view to applying for a university place to study Law, prior to a career in either Law or the Diplomatic Service.

Luca’s co-curricular pursuits at Merchiston have included rugby, cricket (captain of the 2XI for two years), football, hockey, and fives. In addition, he is a member of the Cecil Stagg Society, has led the Students’ Forum this year, and has thoroughly enjoyed his Koinonia work, which has involved mentoring primary school children through the charity Place2Be.

Luca states that his aims as Captain of School will be to continue the good work of this year’s student leaders, to build a bridge between the youngest and oldest members of the School, and to establish himself as a person who every pupil can look up to and feel able to approach over any issue.

Cargilfield School clearly prepared Luca well for his time at Merchiston, and it is clear that he has very happy memories of his time there: this was particularly evident in the presentation he gave to Cargilfield’s current pupils, along with other Cargundians, in early February this year. He takes up his new responsibilities at Merchiston at the start of next term, when we also look forward to welcoming Cargilfield’s current Captain of School to our community, who is also the worthy recipient of an All-Rounder Scholarship  – we hope that he will be as happy and successful with us as Luca has been.

Sincere congratulations go to Luca, and very best wishes as he takes over the reins in this important leadership position. We all look forward to the major contribution he will make, along with the others in leadership positions shortly to be announced, to the life of Merchiston.
