At Merchiston Castle School, we are proud of our long-standing partnership with St George’s School for Girls. This valued relationship enriches the experience of our pupils and ensures that our all-boys Senior School combines the benefits of focused single-sex education with meaningful social, academic and co-curricular collaboration.

From an educational journey that balances academic focus, social confidence and real-world connection.
A common misconception about single-sex education is that it limits opportunities to interact and collaborate with others. In reality, life at Merchiston is far from isolated.
Through our partnership with St George’s, Senior School pupils regularly come together for a wide range of shared experiences, including joint expeditions, concerts, theatre productions, academic seminars, debating competitions, Combined Cadet Force activities, social events and collaborative study courses.
These experiences help pupils build confidence, develop respectful relationships and work collaboratively in authentic, real-world settings, preparing them well for university, careers and life beyond school.
A Balanced and Supportive Environment
Within Merchiston itself, pupils benefit from strong female role models across our school community, including teachers, visiting specialists, coaches and pastoral staff. These relationships provide everyday examples of leadership, professionalism and care, helping to shape confident, respectful and socially aware young people.
At the same time, our Senior School’s single-sex academic environment allows boys to learn in a setting that is often less self-conscious and highly focused. It encourages open participation, intellectual curiosity and academic risk-taking during formative years, helping pupils develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of self.
A Thoughtful Educational Balance
Our approach is deliberately balanced. We combine the benefits of co-educational early years and junior education at The Forest, focused academic development within our all-boys Senior School, and regular, meaningful collaboration with our trusted partner school.
The result is an educational experience that prepares pupils not only to achieve academically, but to leave Merchiston as confident, respectful and socially capable young adults.
We also recognise the practical needs of families with children across both schools. Where possible, we align term dates to support parents, and fee concessions are available for eligible families with children attending Merchiston and our partner schools.
