stuart Buchanan House parent evans and Teacher of Geography

I joined Merchiston in 2016 after teaching for 4 years in the Highlands. I can vividly remember my first journey up the main drive of the school towards the main building. It was clear to me that this was a special environment with incredible facilities and grounds. In my time at Merchiston I have been equally impressed by the way our boys do not take this for granted. They have a genuine appreciation for, and take pride in, their school.

In my first years I also took on the role of Assistant Housemaster in Chalmers East. It was here that I was able to see first hand the high-quality pastoral support and guidance available to the boys. In each of the boarding houses are staff and senior prefects, committed to creating a positive, safe and supportive home for the boys during term time. This experience has helped me as I moved on to the role of Evans Housemaster.

A highlight of the school is the wealth of co-curricular activities made available to the boys. The opportunities it provides for boys to explore sports like rugby, experience service and volunteering through the DofE or CCF, and develop their understanding of key environmental issues like sustainability, is second to none.

INTERESTS

I have always had a keen interest in the outdoors and enjoy any activity that enables this. These include, hiking, biking, camping & running.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Teaching boys in the U6th can be a good combination of greatest achievement, inspiring and funny moments. It is always hugely rewarding to see the boys’ holistic understanding of Geography fully come together, after years of study. To see the boys at this stage engaging in high quality, independent discussion and debate on geographical issues is always great to see.
