Sailing

The sailing activity takes place in the Autumn and Summer Terms at Port Edgar Watersports centre, on the Firth of Forth between the bridges.

The sailing school maintains a fleet of RS dinghies, 707 keelboats and a range of canoes and SUPs meaning that there is always an activity available for your son, whatever the weather.
 
It is possible for all boys, from any year group and with any level of experience, to sail in both the Autumn and Summer Terms. The Autumn Term gives priority to the junior boys and they undertake a course of instruction to work towards an appropriate RYA qualification. In the Summer Term senior boys have priority and they discuss an individually tailored programme with the sailing school instructors. Such programmes might include beginners lessons, working towards specific RYA levels, improving racing skills or simply spending time on the water. At the end of the Summer Term the course finishes with a traditional fish & chip supper on the banks of Queensferry Bay overlooking the bridges.
 
Sailing is promoted at all levels. Boys with enough experience and commitment are encouraged to partake in Winter Race Training in preparation for the summer dinghy racing series. Out of season, over the winter, there is the opportunity to undertake a keelboat course at the weekends or complete an RYA powerboat certificate. 

The Principal of the sailing school and senior instructor is a young Merchistonian, Matthew Morson, who developed his own sailing whilst at school.
