Charlotte ArrowsmithTeacher of English as an Additional Language

I started my career as an English as an additional language teacher over 20 years ago in a small, family run language school in Siracusa, Sicily.

Since then, I have worked for many different educational institutions, in many different countries from Japan to the University of Beira, Mozambique. After completing a Masters in Applied Linguistics and TESOL in 2008, I went on to teach on Foundation Programs in China, Qatar and the UAE. I also set up and ran an Intensive English Programme in an international school in Malaysia, which received an award from the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and worked for the British Council in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Alongside my teaching duties, I have always volunteered for extra roles. For example, while working at the United Arab Emirates University, I was a mentor to undergraduate trainee teachers. I have also worked with students who are visually impaired, helping with exam preparation. I was a member of Outreach Programs, working with local girls' schools in the Gulf and Saudi Arabia.

INTERESTS

I am a published writer with articles in national newspapers and magazines in the Gulf and Spain. I love anything creative and recently, my daughter and I set up our own jewellery business. I have always loved painting and have sold my designs in support of Medecins Sans Frontiers and Hope and Homes for Children. I am a huge rugby union fan! I've never played but have been an avid watcher since my school days.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

Being a single mother to a tiny baby, teaching, and doing my Masters in Applied Linguistics, all at the same time. While my daughter, Phoebe, slept the books would come out. Exhausting but it was worth it.
