Stephen DouglasTeacher of English, Resident Tutor for Laidlaw South, B1 Rugby Head Coach

I joined Merchiston in August 2017 following a career break from my previous role as a Teacher of English at Coleraine Grammar School in Northern Ireland.

At Merchiston, I am primarily a Teacher of English from II Form to V Form as well as a Resident Tutor for Laidlaw South. Outside of the classroom, I am an accredited IRFU Stage 4 Head Rugby Coach and am currently Head Coach of the B1 Rugby team.

Merchiston is close-knit community where the staff and the pupils share very positive working relationships. Not only that, we are blessed with our natural surroundings with the Pentland Hills and Colinton Dell right on our doorstep.

INTERESTS

Having been previously contracted with Ulster Rugby and the Irish Rugby Football Union as a player, I am a keen rugby supporter and enjoy being involved with rugby at Merchiston.

I am a keen boxing fan having  previously held an amateur boxing licence in Northern Ireland and have competed in a number of amateur bouts.

I am a published poet and examples of my work can be found in various literary magazines both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS

Arguably my greatest achievement at Merchiston was guiding the 2018/19 B1 Rugby team to an unbeaten season winning both the Langley School U15 Rugby Festival and the Newcastle Falcons U15 Schools 7s competition.
