Alan Murdoch Director of Golf Academy

I have been Head of the School's Golf Academy for the past nine years.  In that time, I have loved providing a comprehensive golf programme tailored to the individual needs of the boys.  The dynamic programme gives each boy the best opportunity to blend their academic studies with golf and any other co-curricular, sport and social activities on offer.

I have enjoyed so many special memories with the academy boys whether away competing in tournaments and matches or on the practice ground at Kings Acre where the boys train and play.  To have the opportunity to spend time with the boys gives me a great sense of satisfcation as I see the development and maturity grow through the wonderful golf offer that the school provides.  I believe the success of the Golf Academy is down to the school investing in excellent staff that recognise the needs of the boys.  The learning environment is also key and we are able to achieve quality through the support and flexibility the school provides for the boys. Previously I was Head Coach at Golf Club Auf der Wendlohe in Hamburg, Germany following higher education in America where I was awarded a golf scholarship to the University of Louisiana  and  competed nationally at Division One level. I then came to Merchiston having played on the Asian Tour and the European Challenge Tour.

Travel - I enjoy learning about different cultures. Such experience makes me a more rounded person which I feel is so important for a coach working with boys from around the world.

Family - to have family around and to know they are there for you with mutual guidance, support, love and care

Sport - I am passionate about sport and love to watch all sports and attend events.

My greatest achievement has been winning my Asian Tour card as a professional golfer by shooting 66(-6) in the last round during the Final Stage Qualifier. My funniest memory has to be while learning to ski as a youngster and attempts to get on the tow!  An inspiring moment was sharing with a blind man to find his new love - golf. He took to the game and through this, improved his golf and gained much self esteem.
