It was great to get a full week of hockey this week, as we just about managed to dodge the Edinburgh frost. On Tuesday, we welcomed Fettes 2XI to Colinton; the first game of the term for the U18 boys. Unsurprisingly, we were rusty in the early stages and found ourselves two goals down quite quickly. The boys regrouped in the Second Half and George pulled one goal back for us. Antonio made his debut in goal and kept us in the game as the Second Half rolled on. Despite improving further we failed to find the equaliser, and the game finished 2-1. There was plenty to learn from for the U18 boys ahead of two more games next week.
Wednesday was an exciting afternoon as we played Cargilfield in a full block fixture of U9, U11 and U13A/B games. For many young boys, this was their first chance to play in hockey fixtures and it seems to be a hit with all the boys surviving without frostbite! Cargilfield came out on top, but all of the games were played in great spirits and all of the boys improved significantly as the games progressed.
On Thursday, the U15 boys travelled to Loretto and came away with a 4-0 win against their B Team. We had lots of the ball but struggled to break down the Loretto defence. Eventually, Glen broke the deadlock just before Half Time. Mr Evans encouraged the boys to pass much more and dribble less in the Second Half. The boys seemed to listen to the advice, as we scored two fantastically well worked goals and made it look easy. Matthew scored two, while Glen scored his second. A special mention must go to Alex, in goals, who pulled off at least one miraculous save in the Second Half.
Well done to all of the boys who played this week in sometimes (very) cold conditions. Next week, we look forward to a bumper week of fixtures as we host Loretto U14/18, Fettes U13 and George Watson’s U14/18 at home.
