11th March, 2019
This week was a quieter week for the hockey teams as the hockey season starts to draw to a close. On Wednesday, the U11 boys welcomed Cargilfield to Colinton for an eight-a-side fixture, which was played in great spirits. In the first half, both teams had periods with the ball, and some nicely finished goals were scored. It was 3-2 to Cargilfield at half time. In the second half, both GKs pulled off some excellent saves, before Cargilfield scored two more to finish as 5-2 winners. Both sets of players enjoyed a great match tea in the Dining Hall afterwards.
The U14 boys finished off their season with a home game against SMC. It was a tough game against a strong team, and we found ourselves 2-0 in the first half. However, the boys continued to work very hard, and Cole was rewarded with his third goal of the season, as we eventually finished up losing 3-1. This has been a fantastic year for this group, playing seven matches with 25 boys getting to represent the School at this age group. Many of the boys were beginners, so I look forward to seeing them again next year, and I am sure we will see some great development and improvement in their hockey. The most important thing is that they continue to enjoy playing the sport and enjoy being part of the team.
Next week is the final week of hockey for the boys. The U9, U11 and U13 boys are looking forward to their block fixture with Belhaven, while it will be an exciting finish for the 1XI. On Tuesday, they host SMC, while on Friday, they travel to Finals Day in Glasgow to play McLaren High School in the Aspire Plate. This is the first time the school will have played at Finals Days, and it will be a great way for some boys to finish their Merchiston hockey careers.
