Ice climbing

1st February, 2016

School TripSixth Form

Braehead ice factor was the destination on Sunday. We spent the first half an hour setting up equipment and the boys learnt how to fit crampons properly on to boots. Inside the arena it is a constant -5°C but the boys were well equipped for this. The session started with traversing at low level to become accustomed to the crampons, and then we proceeded to get experience with the ice axes. Within half an hour the boys were attempting the first climbs and all of the techniques were put into practice at that point.
What was most pleasing was to see inexperienced climbers like Damilola and Sam gain so much experience in such a short space of time. The more experienced climbers quickly started to challenge themselves on vertical ice, and Ben, JJ, Alex, and Peter were all ambitious in their route selections.
James made a comment on the physicality of climbing on ice, and all the boys were pretty tired by the end of the session. A great introduction to ice climbing was had by all!
