13th March, 2018
On the evening of Monday 12 March, the final of the Inter-Clan Debating Competition was held in School. Teams across various age groups battled it out to be our in-house champion as they represented their clans and not just their House.
The motions were challenging as the boys debated the motion that “minimum pricing for alcohol was a good thing” and that “there should be limits to free speech in social media”.
On the night, Alex and Ben prevailed as they offered very clear arguments about the dangers of a lack of regulation and accountability on opinions offered on social media. Team work and clear persuasive arguments made them stand out winners.
Best speaker award went to Charles, who was very active in the floor speeches and who offered a robust defense of the need for Britain to address its binge drinking culture. The boys were questioned by a team of teachers and pupils and special thanks must be extended to Mr Thompson, Riley and Patrick, who were very exacting in their scrutiny of the four speeches as our teacher-pupil panel. In the open floor section, Lachlan made the best floor speech.
Ms Cunningham wishes to thank Mr Lear for allowing the debate to take place in Chalmers East and for making this such a high quality debate.
