We are excited to share the appointment of Huw Jones as the next Headmaster of Merchiston Castle School. Huw is currently Deputy Head of Warminster School, where he has spent the past six years playing a pivotal role in the school’s strategic development, pastoral care and day-to-day leadership.
A highly experienced educator, Huw began his teaching career at St Edward’s School, Oxford, where he served as Head of Department before moving to St John’s School, Leatherhead, where he held the dual roles of Boarding Housemaster and Head of Boarding. He was appointed Deputy Head at Warminster in 2019.
Huw holds a Master’s degree in Education from St Edmund’s College, Cambridge. His research focused on how schools can best nurture resilience in young people—an area that continues to shape his educational philosophy.
He is known for his collaborative approach to leadership and his belief that strong relationships lie at the heart of any successful school.
Alongside his professional background, Huw represented Wales in international hockey for more than a decade, including at two Commonwealth Games, a formative experience that helped shape his belief in the power of consistency, teamwork and resilience. While no longer central to his day-to-day, his sporting background has influenced his outlook on education and personal growth.
Huw will move to Edinburgh this summer with his wife Kerry, a teacher and former Assistant Director of Sport, and their two sons Samuel (6) and Louis (4), both of whom will be joining the Merchiston community as pupils.
Huw will work closely with current Headmaster Jonathan Anderson during the summer term to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition. Jonathan, who has served with distinction since 2018, will take up his new post as Headmaster of Campbell College, Belfast, in September.
Reflecting on his appointment, Huw said:
“I feel privileged to have been entrusted with the leadership of Merchiston Castle School at a pivotal time in its history.
“Throughout the recruitment process, I was struck not only by the school’s beautiful setting and the exceptional opportunities it provides for its pupils, but also by the deep sense of pride and shared purpose that unites the community.
“Most inspiring of all is Merchiston’s commitment to placing the quality of relationships as the foundation of the school’s excellence.
“I look forward to meeting more of the community and working closely with Jonathan to ensure a seamless transition before getting down to work in the new school year.”
Chairman of the Board of Governors, Gareth Baird, said:
“Huw impressed us not only with his experience and insight, but also with his warmth, authenticity and thoughtful approach.
“His vision aligns perfectly with Merchiston’s mission to produce young men who are curious, kind and confident.”
We look forward to formally welcoming Huw, Kerry, Samuel and Louis later this year, and we will be arranging opportunities for parents, staff and pupils to meet Huw in the Autumn term.
