Junior Spanish trip to Denia
30th October, 2017
At the start of the October half-term, a number of boys set off on the annual junior Spanish trip to Denia. This trip has run successfully for several years and gives students the opportunity to practise their Spanish, learn more about the history and culture of Spain, and also enjoy some Spanish food, beaches and sunshine!
We stayed in a lovely hotel near the port in the centre of Denia, a small coastal town located in the sunny Valencian region of Spain, famous for the paella and oranges! The boys attended a family-run language school in the heart of the town for intensive Spanish lessons in small groups, which they enjoyed. In the afternoons, they had the opportunity to take part in a number of different activities, including a visit to the famous historical watch-tower El Jarro, a guided tour of Denia’s castle, and even an authentic paella tasting. These activities were interspersed with a good dose of swimming and beach games!
On the Sunday of the trip, everyone had the day off and we traveled to the Valencian capital to learn more about the city and the culture of the region. After a very informative guided tour of the historical centre, from the city walls to the silk market, we made our way to the old river-bed, which has been converted into a series of parks and leisure areas. We enjoyed a picnic in the sun, and this was followed by the ubiquitous game of touch, of course!
This was topped off by a trip to the Oceanografico, a truly superb aquarium located in the City of Arts and Culture. As well as getting the opportunity to see sharks, turtles, beluga whales and walruses, the aquarium promotes a strong conservationist message. The highlight of the day must have been the dolphin show that we enjoyed in the afternoon….or perhaps, more accurately, the dance competition the boys took part in as part of the show! There was also a photography competition throughout the day, and some of the shots from the aquarium were particularly impressive.
We had a wonderful time in Denia and were well looked after by the staff at TLC language school and the Costa Blanca Hotel. A big “thank you” to the staff who made it possible and the boys who came along and helped make the trip such fun!
