Kevin Thomson Academy Visit
10th November, 2017
The Kevin Thomson Academy came to Merchiston to lead a skills-based training session, which was a fantastic opportunity for Merchiston football participants. The session was led by Kevin Thomson, a former professional footballer at Hibernian, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Dundee, who also represented Scotland. Kevin McDonald also led the session: he also had a professional career in football with Hibernian, Clyde, Airdrie and Alloa.
The session was high intensity from the beginning and the boys all responded very well to Kevin’s warm up drill and very friendly and positive attitude. The boys began with drills focussed on first touches of the football and close control in the centre circle. The session then went up a notch, with the next drill focussing on touch and awareness but a fitness aspect was then added, with sprints and sit-ups as part of a cleverly constructed training drill.
The boys then finished with a defence vs attack drill that focussed on spreading the game, with Kevin Thomson offering excellent advice to the boys about finding space and spreading the game. The group then played an 8-a-side match, including Kevin Thomson, making it an even bigger challenge for the opposing team.
The visit of Kevin and his Academy is an incredible and very memorable opportunity for the SSP football participants. A very inclusive session with boys from Shell to the Upper Sixth had the opportunity to train and play with two experienced professional footballers and I am sure the advice, training session and the full experience will be a lifelong memory for all involved.
