Welcome

Chalmers East & West are the point of entry for our Boarding pupils into the Senior School and, as such, holds a real significance in a Merchiston boy’s career.

It is not uncommon for a boy in the Sixth Form to cite Chalmers East or West as his most memorable year; it is a mixing pot, with boys coming from all over the world. It is this unique experience of getting to know and living with so many diverse individuals that makes this House so special.

Our main aims in the House are to encourage friendship and camaraderie; develop responsibility; and cultivate a sense respect for those around us and our surroundings.

Chalmers is a place where we wish boys to feel free to just ‘be’, to develop their passions and gain confidence.

We look to develop positive habits that will enable our young men to thrive in an ever-changing world and, in immediate terms, to equip them for their GCSE courses. We aim to encourage our pupils to embrace a principle-centred approach to life and to establish what is truly important to them and to live by their established ‘House Values’.
