We are delighted that Rufus, our 1XV and 1VII Captain, has been selected to play for the Great Britain U18 7s team.

Rufus comments: “The selection process involved being invited by the GB U18 7s management to a one-day trial at Bisham Abbey, near London, with 30 other representatives from England, Wales and Scotland. We took part in two sessions, lasting an hour and a half, of skills, games and conditioning.
On 4 May, the squad of 12 will travel to Lithuania to play against Belgium, Georgia and the hosts, Lithuania, who are in our group. If we come out on top of our group, we then go into the quarter finals.
Personally, I am seriously excited about being given the chance to play at the international level of 7s and testing myself physically and mentally in a brand new environment. I feel extremely fortunate to have been selected and look forward to trying to make the most of this opportunity.”

Director of Rugby at Merchiston, Roddy Deans, comments: “Rufus has been at the School from the age of eight and is a true product of our Merchiston Rugby Programme. This is an outstanding achievement and clearly demonstrates the talent he possesses. His commitment and dedication to his training away from the field is now paying off, allowing him to perform at the highest level. We are all very proud of his achievements this season. Being captain of the Scotland U18, beating England, France and Ireland, and now being selected for the GB 7s squad rounds off an incredible season. Does it get any better for an aspiring young rugby player? There is no doubt in our minds that he is a shining star of the future.”

We wish Rufus, and the GB team, the very best of luck in May!
