MusicSixth Form

The massed Choral Society rehearsal with the girls of St George’s School on the evening of Thursday 25 February marked the start of a very hectic period of music-making for Merchiston’s musicians. Further such rehearsals will follow, culminating in a joint performance of Vivaldi’s Gloria at a concert, which will be a Whole School event, on Saturday 19 March in the magnificent surroundings of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. For our pipers and drummers, there is also a lot happening: on Tuesday 1 March, our internal Solo Piping and Drumming Competitions take place in the Robertson Building, closely followed by the Watson’s Solo and Pipe Band Competition on Sunday 6 March, the Glasgow Highland Club Piping and Drumming Competition on Friday 11 March, and the Scottish Schools’ Pipe Band Competition, held at Broughton High School, on Sunday 13 March. For other instrumentalists, our McLeod Cup and Forbes Bowl Competitions, this year adjudicated by Edward Coleman, Director of Music at Loretto School, take place on the evening of Thursday 3 March, whilst many of them, along with the Close Harmony Group, will be giving a concert for the residents of Old Farm Court on Monday 7 March.

We wish all of our musicians well as they embark on this hectic run-up to the end of term, and look forward to hearing their performances.
