Physicists visit Heriot-Watt University
5th February, 2016
On Thursday 4 February, ten Upper Sixth students visited the High Voltage lab at Heriot-Watt University. The students were treated to a demonstration of Tesla Coils and Pylon Insulator Testing. This was a powerful display of High Voltage applications, generating in the region of 4 million volts from the Tesla Coil.
We then spent the afternoon in one of the First Year teaching labs, studying several phenomena related to Electromagnetic Induction. This allowed us to apply some of the concepts studied in the A Level to some unusual and incredible effects, testing both practical and communication skills.
The boys (as well as the staff!) had a really valuable and interesting afternoon and enjoyed the chance to see some rare and remarkable demonstrations. Many thanks go to Mrs Ryan for organising the trip and to Dr Dunnigan and Mr Lorimer at the labs at Heriot-Watt for putting it all on.
