6th February, 2019
On Tuesday 22 February, 68 Merchiston Scholars from Fourth Form upwards joined staff and invited guests for another stimulating and enjoyable Scholars’ Dinner.
This was our 21st annual Scholars’ Dinner, and the first to be hosted by Mr Anderson as Headmaster.
The event has a well-earned reputation for its convivial atmosphere, including mixed seating to encourage discussion between pupils and staff. This year, guests enjoyed a menu of caesar salad, lamb korma and lemon pots; and, over coffee and chocolates, an address from our guest speaker, Dr Malcolm Craig, Senior Lecturer in American History at Liverpool John Moores University, and a former member of the Merchiston Common Room.
In an entertaining and timely talk, Malcolm treated to us a whistle-stop tour of conspiracy theory as political force in 20th Century America, tracing a direct line from the McCarthy hearings to the present day. After the meal, there was a chance for our UVI Form Scholars to continue the discussion with the speaker and staff in the Old Library.
Many thanks to Malcolm for such an enjoyable talk, and to Alison, Meena, and all in the Catering Staff, for their efforts in making the evening such a success.
