Calum, Ewan, Maxim and Rob lined up on Wednesday to compete in the Scottish Schools Final vs High School of Glasgow.Calum and Ewan started off playing their doubles first and won 6-2 6-2. Maxim, who was playing at #3, started well, winning the first set, but his opponent fought back and forced a third set match tie-break. Maxim led 9-5 but was not able to close it out and lost 14-12. Rob, at #4 singles, battled back after losing the first set 6-0 to lead 5-3 in the second set, but eventually lost the set 7-5. Merchiston was 2-1 down before lunch.
After a brief team lunch provided by St George’s, Ewan, playing at #2, quickly levelled the tie at 2-2 with a 6-2 6-2 win. Maxim and Rob put Merchiston 3-2 up after winning their doubles match with a solid performance. At this stage, Calum was fighting a real battle, playing at #1 singles. His opponent was playing some fantastic tennis and Calum was doing all he could to hang on to the match and forced a second set tie-break. Calum saved a match point on the way to winning the tie-breaker 10-8. Calum raced out to an early lead in the third set match tie-break and never looked back, winning that 10-3.
The High School of Glasgow boys gave a fantastic performance and they can be really proud of their fighting spirit and level of tennis produced. Merchiston has now won the Scottish Schools Cup five out of seven years; congratulations to the team!
