Pastoral Care & Wellbeing

Ours is a close-knit community where every student is known as an individual. Through strong relationships and a clear pastoral structure, students are supported to feel confident, included and able to engage fully in school life.

Each student benefits from a well-defined support network. House Parents, Deputy House Parents, Tutors and Assistant House Parents work closely together to oversee both wellbeing and day-to-day progress, providing consistent guidance and care.

Senior students, including Prefects, also play an important role in supporting younger pupils, helping to create a culture of mutual respect and shared responsibility within the school.

Wellbeing is monitored regularly, and students are encouraged to share their experiences and seek support when needed. This proactive approach ensures that concerns are identified early and addressed thoughtfully.

Alongside everyday pastoral support, students have access to a range of specialist services.

Our Chaplaincy team provides space for reflection and spiritual guidance, while professional counselling is available on site. Teaching staff also play a key role, supporting students through their daily interactions in the classroom, co-curricular activities and boarding houses.

Merchiston offers in-school psychotherapy and assessment through our partnership with The Anchor Practice.

A highly specialist child psychotherapist provides regular sessions for students, alongside opportunities for staff and parents to seek guidance.

This provision strengthens our long-standing commitment to mental wellbeing, ensuring that expert, confidential support is available within the school environment.

Counselling is voluntary and confidential (within safeguarding guidelines), allowing students to engage in a way that feels comfortable and appropriate for them. Where further support is needed, additional provision can be arranged through the practice.
