Lessons learnt outside the classroom are crucial in a boy’s development, and the skills he learns are transferable into other areas of school life.

A key feature of Merchiston Castle School is the very wide range of sporting and co-curricular activities on offer to boys of all ages. There are up to 20 sports and 30 co-curricular activities on offer for boys of all abilities, as well as specialist tennis and golf academies. The School is currently represented at national and international level in many sports, including athletics, cricket, rugby and target shooting. More than 60 Merchistonians have played senior international rugby, and we have also produced 24 cricket internationalists.

Boys have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and the CCF, as well as sports such as rowing, golf, squash, fives, football, cricket and athletics – to name a few. Music and Drama are major parts of life at the School. These departments collaborate regularly and pupils of all ages have the chance to be involved, either performing on stage or working behind the scenes.

Talented tennis players and golfers can enrol as members of the School’s Tennis and Golf Academies. Merchiston’s Tennis Academy has been the Scottish Schools Tennis Champions for the last 6 out of 8 years and is ranked number two in the UK in the LTA Team Tennis Schools rankings. Merchiston has its own Golf Academy, members of which became the ISGA National Junior League Champions 2015.
