Athletics is one of the three major sports at Merchiston. It is predominantly a summer sport with  fixtures against other schools which take place in the final term. Most of the fixtures are against local Edinburgh schools or at Pitreavie Stadium in Fife. Additional to this we also compete South of the Border at Gateshead Arena at the HMC North of England Championships and also enter the Scottish Schools Indoor Championships at Emirates Arena in the Lent Term.

Athletics is compulsory for your son up to and including IV Form in the Summer Term. In addition to the regular summer fixtures, the team also competes in the Edinburgh Schools Championships and in the Scottish Schools Championships at Grangemouth. The athletics season culminates in The Games, held on the penultimate Friday of the Summer Term followed by the annual Celebration of Sport Dinner in the evening.

As with all the other sports, if your son excels in his chosen track or field event, he is supported in his training programme. Since 2016 we have offered winter training at Saughton as one of their Co-Curricular options in the lent term which helps to prepare them for the competitive summer term. In recent years the School has boasted Scottish and British Champions at all levels and also helped to support boys achieve their dreams of gaining Athletics Scholarships to University.
