Athletics is one of the major sports at Merchiston Castle School and plays a central role in the summer sporting programme. Combining track, field and endurance disciplines, athletics offers pupils the opportunity to challenge themselves individually, contribute to team success, and develop strength, speed, resilience and determination.
During the Summer Term, pupils compete regularly in fixtures against schools across Edinburgh and beyond, with competitions taking place both locally and at leading venues including Pitreavie Athletics Centre, Emirates Arena and Gateshead International Stadium. Merchiston athletes also compete in prestigious events including the Edinburgh Schools Championships, Scottish Schools Championships and the HMC North of England Championships.
Athletics forms a core part of the sporting programme through to Fourth Form, ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to develop confidence, fitness and technical ability across a range of track and field disciplines.
For pupils with particular talent or ambition, additional support is available through tailored training programmes and specialist coaching. Winter training opportunities help athletes prepare for the competitive season, and in recent years Merchiston pupils have achieved success at Scottish and British level, with some progressing to university athletics scholarships.
The season culminates in The Games, one of the highlights of the school calendar, celebrating individual achievement, team spirit and the enduring sporting values that define life at Merchiston.
