Hockey

The sport is played on the School’s artificial surface, which has significantly enhanced both training quality and match experience since its opening. This allows for year-round development of key technical and tactical skills in a high-quality playing environment.

Hockey is introduced to all pupils through PE in the Junior and Middle Years, ensuring strong foundations in skills, game understanding and enjoyment of the sport.

In addition, pupils can choose to play hockey as part of the afternoon activity programme during the Autumn and Lent Terms, with structured coaching sessions focused on development, teamwork and competitive play. The Merchiston Hockey Club also provides an additional evening training opportunity once per week across these terms, supporting both participation and performance pathways.

As the sport continues to grow across the School, Merchiston fields a range of competitive teams, including 1st XI, U15, U14, U13, U11 and U9 sides. These teams compete in regular fixtures against schools in Edinburgh and further afield, providing valuable match experience for players at all stages of development.

Hockey at Merchiston continues to expand as part of the School’s wider sporting offer, combining strong participation, improving performance standards and increasing competitive opportunities for pupils across all age groups.
