Rugby is woven into the fabric of life at Merchiston Castle School. For generations, Merchiston has been recognised as one of Scotland’s leading rugby schools, combining a proud heritage with a progressive performance pathway that supports every player from those discovering the game for the first time to those competing on the national and international stage.
Our aim is simple: that every pupil enjoys their rugby, forms lifelong friendships and experiences the challenge, teamwork and resilience that make the game such a powerful part of school life. Through expert coaching, age-appropriate athletic development and a strong fixture programme, every player is supported to fulfil their potential while playing alongside friends in a thriving team environment.
That tradition is matched by sustained success on the pitch. Merchiston has been crowned Scottish U18 Schools Cup champions eight times, with a further four runner-up finishes; a reflection of the strength, consistency and ambition of our rugby programme across generations.
Current pupils are regularly selected for regional and national performance pathways. Beyond school rugby, Merchiston has produced generations of players who have gone on to represent the Scotland national rugby union team, professional clubs and elite academies. A significant number of current Scotland internationals began their journey on the pitches at Merchiston; something that continues to inspire the next generation.
What makes Merchiston rugby special, however, goes beyond results. Senior players act as mentors and role models for younger pupils, creating a culture of brotherhood, humility and ambition. It is this sense of belonging, alongside outstanding coaching and opportunity, that allows pupils not simply to play rugby, but to fall in love with the game.
