Alan Johnston Senior Deputy Head

I joined Merchiston as a Modern Languages teacher too many years ago to mention, (even before the previous Headmaster joined!), and I am now in my second stint here. I have also been a Housemaster (Rogerson), the Examinations Officer and a sports coach (rugby and Fives) before taking on a promoted post in London.

I couldn’t keep away so, after 11 years'absence, when the opportunity arose to apply for the role of Deputy Head Pupil Support, I jumped at it and was fortunate enough to be successful. Since returning in 2015 I have taken on the role of Senior Deputy Head (2017) and can be seen rushing around enjoying seeing how everyone makes the most of all of the opportunities Merchiston offers. My role is to support and encourage both staff and pupils to ensure that we work together and put wellbeing at the heart of everything that we do. This is a wonderful community and it is the warmth, energy and commitment from both pupils and staff that make it so successful.

I am a dedicated hispanophile.

I am an obsessive music fan and semi-competent guitarist and singer-songwriter.

In my free time I enjoy cooking, reading crime fiction and catching up with my London-based children (they are grown-up now, don’t panic!)

Perhaps my greatest achievement is not being laughed at by the Sixth Form when singing at the Christmas Dinner! A sing-along is good for us all!
