Bruce Aitchison Housemaster Chalmers East, Teacher of PE & PSHE
I grew up in the Borders and attended Galashiels Academy. I love sport and played everything I could at school and was very honoured to be the 1st XV Rugby Captain when we won the Scottish Schools’ Cup in 1997.
I was also a Prefect, was in the Geography Quiz Team, went on 2 German Exchanges trips, played in the Football Team… I loved school!
I went to the University of Edinburgh and graduated with a BEd in Physical Education. On leaving University I lived and worked in Hong Kong for 4 years as teacher in an International School. This was an amazing experience and still feel like Hong Kong is a second home.
I returned to Scotland in 2005 and worked in 3 schools as a teacher, Guidance Teacher, Head of Faculty and most recently as a Deputy Head Teacher at Hawick High School.
I am married to Nichola, who is the Head of PE at Mary Erskine School. Nikki is still active, regularly playing Netball and chasing around after my daughters, Maisie (newly 10) and Katy (nearly 8).
We are very excited to join the Merchison Castle Family and look forward to all of the opportunities and challenges that will bring. We have received a fantastically warm welcome and I can’t wait to get started!
My first love was football, especially Hibs and then found Rugby was my game when I went to Galashiels Academy. I have recently been the stadium announcer at Murrayfield and love to speak and perform in public.
Spending time with my daughters brings me the most joy and I look forward to exploring the grounds at Merchiston more and more with them!
I performed for 3 years in a row as the Pantomime Dame in School Productions, a role I loved!
