Clare Nugent head of D&T, Administrative Assistant in Golf Academy
My involvement with the school began as a parent when our two sons joined J4 in Pringle and I became involved with the co-curricular programme as a cookery teacher. In 2013 I became Pringle Housemother and part-time teacher of Product Design, later joining the DT&E department full-time. I am now Head of Design and Technology and I teach Electronics and Computing as a Tutor in the Middle School. My other responsibilities include assisting with the Golf Academy and the Senior Pipe Band.
My role with the Golf Academy involves helping get the boys to and from training; tutoring aspects of boys' academic work when they are juggling study and sport commitments; helping to organise transport and accommodation for the numerous competitions that the boys compete in; liaising with suppliers and our own school shop on kit and uniform; writing news and social media posts; baking!
Merchiston boys benefit from having Teaching Staff fully involved in their co-curricular and sports programme. I find that having insights into study, Golf Academy and music commitments offers a strong position from which to help the boys in their busy school lives.
I like to keep fit with running and try to (slowly!) complete a marathon per year. I especially enjoy getting out on the nearby Pentland Hills.
One great achievement at Merchiston that comes to mind was finding the courage to jump off sea cliffs with Mr Harkins and a group of boys while on a trip to Raasay – nerves and exhilaration in equal measure!
