Fiona Darling Chalmers East Housemother and part time Teacher of Art
I came to Merchiston from a state school in London as a full time teacher of Art. I enjoy helping the boys to work creatively, to express themselves in their studies and to develop their artistic interests and skills.
Beyond the Art Centre, I work closely with the school’s Drama team and have enjoyed designing and developing varied sets for a wide range of Christmas and Easter productions. I am also a keen skier and for over a decade, I organised and led the overseas ski trips here.
IN 2019 I was appointed as the Housemother to the Chalmers East boarding house where I am directly involved in the everyday life of the boys, providing support and guidance and sharing in their joys. I continue to work part-time in the Art Department, creating art and sculpture, making a mess and striving to inspire the next wave of Merchiston Artists.
Merchiston is a wonderful community of which I feel privileged to be part. The beauty of the grounds, the enthusiasm of the boys and the dedication and support of my colleagues and friends are very special.
My interests include all things visually creative, Art, Design, Architecture and Photography. I love to ski, camp and hillwalk. Many holidays have been spent in Cornwall where playing in the waves has been a main focus for the family. We have toured Europe extensively, always in a tent, discovering out of the way places. The Scottish hills are my passion and the further north I go the happier I am.
I have been proud of the drama sets I have produced and it has always been a great thrill to see the pupils perform and see everyone’s hard work come together in a wonderfully creative crescendo.
