Florence Donaldson Teacher of Design and Technology

Whilst being born in Edinburgh, we moved down to Dumfries and Galloway where I attended Lockerbie Academy and grew to love all things Art, Design and Technology. I was fortunate to go on a number of school trips, including a few to America, Italy and London. These helped to firm my passion in the Design and Technology/ Arts industries.

After 18 years of visiting the family and friends we had in Edinburgh, moving back up to Edinburgh to attend University was a no brainer. I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Masters in Arts and an Honours in Architectural Design, then went onto Strathclyde University to complete my PDGE in Technical Education.

I spent my probationary teaching year up in Aberdeen, but I quickly moved back down to Edinburgh in 2016 to take up a teaching post at Trinity Academy. I love living in Edinburgh, in my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful cities in the world; rich in culture, entertainment and opportunities, while exhibiting some of the worlds most iconic architecture and a wealth of opportunities in the Arts. I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to call it my home.

I am so excited to be working at Merchiston Castle School. The variety of opportunities on offer are second to none, and I am thoroughly looking forward to getting involved in, and creating, as many opportunities for the boys as possible. I bring a wealth of design knowledge to the Design and Technology department. I have ran and won a number of extracurricular opportunities over the last few years, including Design Venture, #DigiInventors, Shell Bright Ideas and EDT’s Go4Set and Bronze Challenge. I look forward to creating an array of exciting extracurricular STEM opportunities here at Merchiston Castle.

INTERESTS

Architecture and Travel - I love seeing different parts of the world and learning all about their culture, particularly their history. I find Architecture in different countries fascinating, I would travel for this reason alone.

Design - everything about it; interior, graphic, product, web, technology… it’s all so exciting!

Football - I attend as many Scotland international home games as I can. Sadly, the majority of international away games fall during term time, or I’d be at them too! Read below if you’re interested to see what local Edinburgh team I support.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

Working with four pupils to win an international design competition which resulted in their work being put on display along the River Thames.

INSPIRING MOMENT

Hibs winning the Scottish Cup after 116 years.
